5 AI mistakes we caught

Five things AI got wrong on our own concept sets: three hands, a misspelt label, impossible physics, the wrong build order and video drift. Here’s what happened, why, and the check that catches each one.

NORTHE concept: the plain packshot every image here was made from
like this
01

One clean photo

Phone is fine: daylight from a window, a plain wall or sheet behind, the label facing the camera and sharp. No flash. For a person in the shot, add a character sheet of your model: front, 3/4, profile and a smile.

02

An image AI that takes a photo

Gemini or ChatGPT both work. Upload your photo first, then paste the prompt.

03

Paste, generate, check

One prompt per image. Before you use one, check the label against your real product, letter by letter.

NORTHE concept brand: a man pours beard oil from a dropper into his palm, the bottle on the counter
01

Hands: count everything with fingers.

One NORTHE shot came back with three hands on one bottle. AI builds hands from patterns, not anatomy, so the more a pose overlaps (a hand holding a dropper over a palm), the more likely an extra one appears.

  • Count hands and fingers in every image, at full size.
  • Write it into the prompt: “natural hand anatomy, one thumb and four fingers on each hand”.
  • If a hand is wrong, crop it out or make the shot again. Never post it hoping nobody looks.
NORTHE concept brand, beard oil: Let it stand alone
02

Spelling: read the label letter by letter.

The NORTHE beard oil label came back as “BEARO OIL”. Small print is where AI slips most: it draws letters as shapes, so a D turns into an O and nobody notices at thumbnail size.

  • Attach the real packshot to every prompt, so the model copies the label instead of inventing it.
  • Zoom to 200% and read every word against the packshot.
  • Add text such as callouts and prices afterwards in Canva or Figma, not in the prompt.
DUSK concept brand, cold brew oat latte: Hands — five fingers each
03

Physics: act the shot out.

In one DUSK cold brew shot, the model drank from the side of the can. It looked fine for a second, then it didn’t. AI knows what drinking looks like, not how a can opens.

  • For every action (drinking, pouring, wearing, opening), ask: would a real person do it like this?
  • Describe the mechanics in the prompt: “drinking from the opening at the top of the can”.
  • Check that the product really touches what it stands on: a contact shadow, no floating.
KESTREL concept brand: a CNC machine cutting an empty acetate sunglasses front
04

Process: know how the product is made.

For the KESTREL film, the first craft shots had the lenses already in a frame that was still being cut. The AI doesn’t know the build order; a buyer who knows eyewear does.

  • Before any behind-the-scenes shot, write the real steps in order (cut, polish, hinge, lens).
  • Say what is not there yet: “an empty front, no lenses fitted”.
  • Ask someone who knows the product to look at the board before you animate it.
KESTREL concept brand: a hand holds an empty sunglasses front against a polishing wheel
05

Drift: keep only the clean seconds.

In the KESTREL video, green lenses appeared in an empty frame a couple of seconds into the clip. Image-to-video models drift: the longer the clip runs, the further it moves from the first frame.

  • Start every clip from a checked still, never from text alone.
  • Watch each clip frame by frame and mark the second it changes.
  • Cut before the drift and build the film from short clean pieces.
THE CHECK

Five questions, every image.

AI is fast. Checking is the job. This is the list we run before anything is delivered; copy it and use it on your own images. The longer version is in the AI product image checklist.

Our pre-delivery check
Count: hands, fingers, products, legs.
Read: every letter on the label against the packshot, at 200%.
Act it out: would a real person hold, pour or wear it like this?
Touch: does the product sit on the surface, with a contact shadow?
Video: frame by frame, cut before anything changes.

Only the fixed images are shown. The flawed first tries were replaced, so each section describes what went wrong. NORTHE, DUSK and KESTREL are concept brands, and every image here was made with AI.

! Where DIY stops

This gets you most of the way.

The last part is where most sets fall apart. It’s the part we do, from $199.

  • Where it breaksWhat we do
  • The label drifts. A letter changes, the logo moves, the colour shifts. We check every image against your real product, word for word.
  • Hands and faces go wrong. An extra finger, or a face that changes from shot to shot.We count, crop and redo before you see anything.
  • The set doesn’t match. Light, colour and the model wander from image to image. One art direction across the whole set, so it reads as one campaign.
  • Video drifts. Clips morph after a few seconds. We plan the shots, keep the clean seconds and cut it on the beat.
